Bull Drum/Giant Black Drum Fishing:
For these fish, I believe in getting them landed as quick as possible to reduce the
amount of stress they receive, since they have to be release anyway. These fish are very
strong and they will find any weak points in your tackle. They can be caught on lighter gear but it definitely is not good for the fish.
I use heavy tackle to achieve this. The reels I use are 5500 series or higher spinning reels. Rods are heavy power, fast action, rated for 30 to 80lb line and 2 to 8 oz lure weights.
I use 50lb braid mainline, and 60lb fluorocarbon leader tied direct to the mainline
when fishing artificials. When fishing live/cut bait rigs I use strong swivels.
I used to use large Bucktails and other large jigs but had issues with hooks breaking off or getting straightened. The jigs listed below have 2x Strong Mustad Ultrapoint hooks and I have yet to break or bend one.
I prefer large 7 inch plastics in basic colors. I mostly use the paddle tail verisons, but will throw the jerk style ocassionly in shallow water situations. Jig weights vary depending on depth of water and the amount of current you are in. I also will throw smaller 5in plastic depending on the situation.
As far as using live or cut bait, I always go for large 2x strong circle hooks typically Carolina rigged with egg style sinkers. Fishfinder rigs are another option and I like using bank style sinkers on them to help reduce snags.
Popping Cork setups with a soft plastic on a lighter weight jig head are another option in shallow, muddy or tannic water situations. They are popular down in NC waters.
